Sustainability: Our Achievements

The Interface journey toward Mission Zero is made more focused by measuring our progress.Our key EcoMetrics indicators include waste reduction, renewable energy, carbon emissions, water and energy usage, and percentage of recycled and biobased materials in products.

To date, we have achieved:

EcoMetrics:

• 80% reduction in waste sent to landfill since 1996 per unit of production
• Water intake in manufacturing is down 80% since 1996 per unit of production
• Total energy use down by 43% since 1996 per unit of production
• Non-renewable energy is down by 60% since 1996 per unit of production
• Actual reduction of Interface GHG emissions by 44% from baseline 1996
• 30% of global energy is from renewable sources
• 36% of total raw materials are recycled or bio-based materials
• Cumulative avoided waste costs totalling $433 million since 1995

Additional Sustainability Metrics include:

• ReEntry. Diverted 11,000 tonnes of carpet and carpet scraps from landfills in 2009 globally
• Sold 23.2 million m² of Cool Carpet in 2009 globally
• Purchased and retired 386,000 tonnes of offsets for Cool Carpet in 2009 globally
• Safety. Total accident frequency rate in 2009 is down 62% from 1999
• 99.7% of the products sold in Europe were manufactured in Europe
• Electricity in all factories in Europe is 100% renewable

Other measures of our progress can be found in the success of some of our innovative products and services, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the finished carpet installation:

• 7M m² of Microtuft products sold in EMEAI since launch in 2000
• Microtuft products account already for 14% of our EMEAI sales
• 6M m² of Random design products sold in EMEAI since launch in 2001
• Random design products account already for 11% of our EMEAI sales
• 16.1M TacTiles™ shipped in the US - enough to install 4M m² of carpet tiles.
